大外一部为西北大学逢单数年度入学的本、专科学生公共英语课教学任务承担者。该部现有教师29人，其中教授1人，副教授8人，有出国学习经历者6人，已经完成和正在攻读研究生以上学历者13人，绝大多数教师年龄在40岁以下，是一个富有实力、蓬勃向上的集体。
该部教师以教学为中心，在取得优良教学成绩的前提下，积极从事科研工作。现已多次承担省、校级科研项目，正式发表论文逾百篇，出版著作数十本。1999年该部获西北大学“教学管理先进集体”奖。许多教师曾获各种校级奖励，并有1人荣获全国“霍英东青年教师奖”三等奖。
A Brief Introduction to College English Dept I
College English Dept I undertakes the task of College English teaching to all the undergraduates entering the University in odd years．The department consists of 29 teachers，among whom there is one professor and eight associate professors．Six teachers have studied overseas and thirteen teachers either hold or are studying for graduate diplomas．With the vast majority of teachers under forty，the department is full of vitality and promise．
While taking teaching as the center of their work，the teachers of this department actively engage themselves in research related to English teaching．So far，they have fulfilled quite a few scientific projects at provincial and university levels and have published more than a hundred academic articles as well as dozens of books．In 1999．the department was awarded by the University for its excellence in teaching administration．More than a dozen teachers have won university awards of one kind or another and one teacher has won the national Huo Yingdong Young Teachers’ Award．
