I. Translate the following sentences into Chinese. Explain what translation technique you use
in translating each of them.（30%）
1. The crowd fell into respectful silence.
2. The worsening situation soon forced him back to the negotiating table.
3. Aspirin, like Cora Cola and Levis, is one of only a handful of brands to have transcended
cultures, borders and generations to enjoy almost universal recognition.
4. They sky darkened, soon snow was falling in a discouraging abundance.
5. As children can absorb only so much at a time, dole out praise in small but frequent doses.
6. There is no pot so ugly that it can’t find a lid.
7. The uneventful dignity of his life makes for a biography which it would be old to be
thrilled by and which it would be insensitive not to be stirred by.
8. The stars twinkled in the transparent clarity of the sky.
9. The doctor is examining the rat that carries the flea that harbors the germ that infected the
poor child.
10. Poverty in the developing countries has been ascribed by the North to low productivity,
inappropriate domestic policies and inadequate national effort.
Ⅱ. Translate the following two passages into Chinese:（30%）
1. One has the leisure of July for perceiving all the differences of the green of leaves. It is no
longer a difference in degrees of maturity, for all the trees have darkened to their final tone, and
stand in their difference of character and not mere date. Almost all the green is grave, not sad and
not dull. It has a darkened and a daily color, in majestic but not obvious harmony with dark gray
skies, and might look, to inconstant eyes, as prosaic after spring as eleven o’clock looks after the
dawn.
2. For truly successful translating, biculturalism is even more important that bilingualism,
since words only have meaning in terms of the cultures in which they function. Dictionaries and
encyclopedias are important source of strategic cultural information, but they can never take the
place of personal involvement in a foreign society. This is one of the reasons why most programs
for the training of translators and interpreters require that students spend at least six months to a
year in each of the countries where the student’s acquired languages are spoken. Only by being in
the countries in which a foreign language is spoken can one acquire the necessary sensitivity to the
special meaning of words and phrases.
Ⅲ. Translate the following sentences into English:（20%）
1．台湾回归祖国，完成统一大业，是我们这一代人的历史革命。
2．你要避免同老板唱反调，否则他不会提拔你。
3．他站在那里，嘴里叼着烟斗，手里拿着帽子。
4．不要什么都搞一刀切，有区别才有政策。
5．人有喜庆不可生嫉妒心；人有祸患不可生欣喜心。
6．我们家里人都不太爱写信。
7．如果把“安全”二字放在心上，那么事故就会少得多。
