Brief Introduction of College of Foreign Languages, Zhejiang Normal University
The history of the College of Foreign Languages (CFL) at Zhejiang Normal University (ZJNU) can be dated back to 1960, formerly known as the Department of Foreign Languages at ZJNU with two BA Programs in English and Russian. The University was relocated from Hangzhou to Jinhua in 1965. After years of admission suspension during the period of the Cultural Revolution, the Department began to admit students in 1978, and in 1988, the Department of English for General Education was founded at ZJNU. In October 1996, these two departments were merged to become the College of Foreign Languages.
Presently, the college has four departments and offers three BA Programs. The four departments are English, Japanese, Translation and Interpreting, and English for General Education. The three BA Programs are English (Teacher Training), Japanese, and Translation and Interpreting (English-Chinese). The English Program, rated “Excellent” by the Assessment Panel for Undergraduate Teaching organized by the Ministry of Education, is the only one of its kind in Zhejiang Province funded for greater development. Linguistics and Applied Linguistics is a key discipline in Zhejiang, and our Research Institute for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics is a key institute at ZJNU. The College offers four MA Programs in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, Curriculum and Pedagogy (English Education), and Education (English).
The College has 155 faculty and staff members, among whom there are 9 full-time professors and 4 part-time professors, 27 associate professors, 21 with or pursuing Doctorate Degrees, and 109 with Master’s Degrees. Every year, well-known scholars and experts from home and abroad (especially from the UK, the US, Canada, and Japan) are invited to give lectures. Currently we have over 1,000 undergraduate students and 210 postgraduate students. We have established exchange programs with 9 overseas universities, hence we can send excellent students to study in Japan and the US every year.
The two classroom buildings (over 24,000 square meters) we have are facilitated with modern equipments. There are altogether 14 language laboratories, 4 network classrooms, and 48 multi-media classrooms. A simultaneous interpretation laboratory is under construction. With other advanced facilities such as recording studio, FM radio and a large lecture hall, we provide the faculty and students with good conditions for teaching, learning and academic activities.
