上海戏剧学院导演系始建于1962年，第一任系主任为吴仞之。历任系主任为胡导、张仲年、苏乐慈、李建平。现任系主任卢昂、书记眭慕蛟。
导演系专门为戏剧艺术培养导演专门人才。自建系以来，为国家、部队和各省市专业剧团培养了大批话剧、歌剧、戏曲和电影电视导演人才。改革开放后，导演系得到了很大的发展，教学力量和教学规模不断扩大，教学科研不断深入，培养的学生绝大多数成为表演艺术团体的骨干和领导，其中相当数量的学生已成为具有全国影响的著名导演。
导演系的教学任务由一批具有丰富教学经验和实践经验的老、中、青教师担任，现有教师11人，其中博士生导师1人、硕士生导师4人、教授3人、副教授3人、讲师3人、助教3人；教师中具有博士学位的1人，硕士学位的6人，攻读博士学位的2人，攻读硕士学位的1人，教师队伍有着较高的教学和理论研究水平。
自2009年起，我系开始举办系列“国际导演大师班”，每年聘请五位国际一流的导演大师来我院进行大师班教学，已于2009年和2010年成功举办了美国和英国两届，2011年俄罗斯导演大师班也已筹备完成。近年来，我系聘请了多位国际著名戏剧导演担任客座教授，他们是美国哥伦比亚大学教授安•博格、耶鲁大学导演系主任利兹•戴蒙德教授和英国皇家艺术学院院长尼古拉斯•巴特尔、台湾著名导演赖声川……
导演系专业课程《导演元素练习》被评为2006年度上海高校市级精品课程，《导演片段教学》2006年被评为学院重点课程。
导演系主要课程包括：导演基础理论、表演基础训练、导演构思、导演片段教学、多幕剧创作、影视导演基础等。
本系教师曾获“新世纪百千万人才国家级人选”；教育部“霍英东教育基金奖”；上海市教委“曙光奖”；上海市“宝钢优秀教师奖”、“育才奖”以及国务院颁发的政府特殊津贴。
在导演艺术创作上囊括了所有国家级舞台艺术奖项，包括：国家舞台艺术精品工程精品剧目奖、文华大奖、文华奖；“新世纪杰出导演”；中宣部“五个一工程”奖；中国话剧金狮导演奖；中国戏剧节“优秀导演奖”及“国家有突出贡献的话剧艺术家”、“文化部有突出贡献的话剧艺术家”等。

Department of Directing
The Department of Directing of Shanghai Theatre Academy was founded in 1962. The first dean was Wu Renzhi， and the subsequent deans are： Hu Dao， Zhang Zhongnian， Su Leci， and Li Jianping. The current dean is Lu Ang， and the current secretary is Sui Mujiao.
The Department of Directing is dedicated to the training of professional directors for the theatre art. Since its foundation， the department has cultivated a large number of directors on drama， opera， traditional Chinese opera， film and TV for the national， provincial， municipal or military professional theatre troupes. After the reform and opening up， the Department of Directing has gained great development， with the education capacity and scope expanding and the education research deepening. Most of the graduate in the department have become leaders or important members in the art performance group， and many of the students have become famous directors in China.
In the Department of Directing there are teachers of different generations with adequate teaching experience and practice. There are 12 teachers， including 3 professors， 3 associate professors， 3 lecturers and 3 assistant lectures. Among them there are 4 master student tutors and 1 doctor student tutor. There is 1 teacher with doctor’s degree， 6 teachers with master’s degree， 1 teacher studying for the doctorate and 1 teacher studying for the master’s degree. The teachers all have high capacity on education and theory research.
In 2005， the “Directors’ Art Studio” was established as a Shanghai Education Highland Project， and two guest professors were invited in the project – Xiong Yuanwei and Jiang Weiguo. The professional course in the Department of Directing “directing elements exercise” was selected as a municipal key course in Shanghai universities and colleges in 2006， and the course “directing scenes” was selected as a key course in Shanghai Theatre Academy in 2006.
The main courses are： basic theories of directing， basic training on acting， directorial concepts， directing scenes， full length play creation， directing art on traditional opera， basic TV & film directing， etc.
Many of the teachers in the department have won the “Bao Steel Excellent Teacher Prize” and “Education Excellence Prize” in Shanghai， the Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation fellowship by the Ministry of Education， the “Shu Guang Award” by Shanghai Education Commission， and the special government allowance by the State Council of China. Many teachers have won the national， provincial， municipal or military honors on directing creation. The national honors include： “Drama artists with outstanding contribution to China”， “Drama artists with outstanding contribution to Ministry of Culture”， Best Opera Award of National Stage Art， Wen Hua Grand Award， Wen Hua Award， Excellent Director Award， Excellent Drama Award， “Five One Project Award” issued by the Publicity Department of China， “Golden Lion Director Award” of Chinese Drama， “Excellent Director Award” of Chinese Theatre Festival， etc.
