An Overview of the School
The School of Foreign Languages comprises the English Department, the German Department, the Division of College English for Non-English Undergraduates, the Division of Foreign Languages for Non-language Postgraduates, the Center for Technology-aided Foreign Language Teaching, the Center for Self-access English Learning, the Institute of Translation Studies, the Office for Disciplinary Development and Postgraduate Affairs, and other administrative offices. In 2004, it launched the master’s program in Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics and now it enjoys the authorization to confer the master’s degree in the first-rank discipline of Foreign Languages and Literatures. The School has an enrollment of over 500 undergraduates and 100 postgraduates, and it is home to about 150 full-time faculty members, including 7 professors and 48 associate professors. Together with 8 native-speaker teachers, they offer a full range of courses to English and German majors, and are also responsible for teaching varied courses in English, German, French, Japanese, and Russian to students of all levels across the campus and in the community.
Fully committed to producing graduates of strict morals and profound learning who are versed in both Chinese and western cultures, the School has been following a research-based, teaching-oriented development strategy since its founding and has made tremendous progress in teaching, research, team building, disciplinary development, and international exchange. Four courses it offers, namely Advanced English, Comprehensive English, British and American Literatures, and College English for Non-English Majors, have entered the university’s list of “quality courses”; the School was repeatedly named “School of Excellent Ethos of Study” for the past 6 consecutive years; the well-equipped Center for Self-access English Learning, which houses many a digital language lab, an overseas TV viewing room, a web-based audio-visual lab, a multimedia editing studio, two tutoring rooms, a foreign language reference library, and a foreign language resources center, was accredited by the Hubei Provincial Department of Education as the Provincial Demonstration Center for English Learning and Teaching, and the School was honoured by the Ministry of Education as the State-level Demonstration Site for Reform in College English Teaching in 2011… Always an innovator in research, the School has undertaken 30-plus academic projects funded by the provincial department, the ministry or the university, and published more than 270 research papers and 10 books in the past 3 years. In 2009, the School successfully hosted “Central China Symposium on Translation Theory and Teaching” and “International Conference on ESP and its Teaching”, which made its name familiar across the country or even all over the world.
A firm believer in reform, innovation and practice, the School is advancing with the times and radiating with energy and promise. With years of exploration, the School is switching to a new mode of foreign language education that highlights talent cultivation, focuses on disciplinary development and team building, and is supported by the ideological and political education work, which will surely contribute to the higher quality of its graduates and the noble endeavour of turning the university into a top institution in the country.
