甘肃农业大学1950年在西北率先开始了草原科学的教学与科研工作，1953年在全国首批招收草原学硕士研究生，1964年成立草原本科专业，1972年成立了我国第一个草原系，1981年建立了草原学硕士学位授权点，1984年建立了我国第一个草原学博士学位授权点，1988、2002、2007年连续三次被教育部批准为我国草业科学国家重点学科，1992年建立了我国第一个草业学院，1999年教育部批准设置第二批“长江学者奖励计划”特聘教授岗位，2001年建立畜牧学一级学科博士后科研流动站，2003年由科技部批准成立了中-美草地畜牧业可持续发展研究中心，2005年建立草业生态系统省部共建教育部重点实验室，2007年草业科学专业被教育部批准为第一批高等学校特色专业建设点。植物保护本科专业始建于1959年，1980年成立植物保护系，2002年被农业部批准为“农药登记田间药效试验认证单位”，2003年原植物保护系并入草业学院。
50多年来，学院几代教学科研人员不断探索，勇于创新，坚持学研产结合，创立和提出了草原和人工草地的综合顺序分类法、评定草原生产能力的畜产品单位指标系统等重要科学理论，引领我国草业科学事业从无到有、从弱到强、从西北到全国，在我国草业人才培养、引领草业学科发展和促进甘肃乃至全国草产业发展等方面做出了卓越贡献。草业学院作为我国乃至全世界最大的草业科学人才培养基地，毕业生遍布全国30个省、市、自治区的草业教学、科研、推广和管理部门以及部分国际组织、国外研究机构和企业，国家和省级草原站技术和管理骨干的约60%、国内著名草坪企业中约70%的高级管理人员和技术骨干、甘肃省植保管理系统及教学单位约70%的骨干毕业于本学院。在全国开设草业科学专业的30个院校中，有22个院校的骨干教师毕业于本学院。该专业本科教育综合实力（中国大学评价，武书连）一直位居中国大学农学本科草业科学专业第一名。
The teaching and research work in grassland science at Gansu Agricultural University
started in 1950；master students were recruited in 1953；undergraduate enrollment
initiated in 1964．The Department of Grassland Science was set up in 1972．Twelve years later，the national first Ph．D program in this field was established and became the only state key discipline in 1989．Under the auspice of the Education Department of Gansu province，the College of Grassland Science was formed in 1992．The special professor position of “Yangtz River Expert Plan”was established in 1999 at the college．2001 saw post-doctoral station set up and the college was again authorized as the state key discipline．The plant protection discipline was initiated in 1959．the department was set up in 1980．and merged into the college．
The college is made up of 6 departments，6 labs，1 state key discipline，2 provincial key disciplines，1 post-doctoral station，3 doctoral programs and 6 master programs．The Sino-US Center for Grassland and Animal Husbandry Sustainable Development was also established in the college，together with Turf Research Institute and 3 experimental stations outside the campus．Two disciplines including grassland science and plant protection were set up in the college，the former covers bachelor，master，doctoral and post-doctoral levels．The college is responsible for the editing and publishing national journal Grassland and Turf，the Department of Plant Protection was authorized by MOA as the certified unit for registration and field test of pesticide．
The college has 83 staff，including 1 academician，22 professors and 20associate professors．20 Ph．D supervisors and 54 master supervisors （including 22 part-time positions）work for the college，including 3 provincial leading scientists．12 staff was included in provincial “333 scientific and technological talent engineering”and “555 innovative talent engineering”．Six people work for the college as visiting professors．There are 1259 students at the college，including 64 Ph．D，298 masters and 897 undergraduates．
The college has been paying much attention to scientific research，combining teaching，research with production and established many scientific theories，made a great contribution to the development of grassland science．Since the ninth “5 Year Plan”，more than 20 scientific achievements were awarded procincially and nationally．Many new forage breeds were released，and more than 50 scientific and textbooks got published．Three teaching achievements were given the first provincial award and one got the second national award．To date，more than 10 projects from NAC，MOST，MOE，MOA，CAS，NSFC and provincial government as well as international collaboration were undertaken．The college not only develops international exchanges and co-operations frequently with international organization，such as IAEA，FAO，WB，GEF．ICIMODM，etc，but also keeps long-term cooperation with foreign organizations from Australian，Newland，England，Germany，Canada，America and other countries．Young teachers were sent to overseas for scientific visiting and training，many domestic and foreign experts are often invited for scientific visiting and lecturing．International and national workshops and training courses are also hosted．At present，all the teachers and students confidently play their roles in western development；try their best to make the college national base for higher-level talent and continuous education，providing better services for local and national economic construction，social development and ecological construction．
