西北师范大学美术学院前身是国立西北师范学院劳作专修科,设立于1939年,现为西北师范大学所设18个学院之一。
1949年11月,西北师范学院为适应国家艺术教育事业发展的需要,将原三年制的劳作专修科,改建为四年制的艺术系,当时是我国师范院校中最早设立美术专业的五所院校之一,首任系主任由我国著名美术教育家吕斯百先生担任。在后来的岁月里,学院在名称和设置上几经变迁。1996年,学校在原美术系和音乐系的基础上,合并成立了西北师范大学敦煌艺术学院。2006年1月,成立西北师范大学美术学院。
60多年来,先后有吕斯百、常书鸿、洪毅然、刘文清、方匀、韩天眷、汪嶽云、黄胄、陈兴华、张阶平、杨鸣山等多位艺术大师在这里辛勤耕耘,为学院积累了深厚的文化底蕴,形成了优良的办学传统,为甘肃乃至西北和全国的美术教育事业做出了一定贡献.
学院现设有美术学系、艺术设计系、基础教学部、实践教学部、敦煌艺术研究中心、图书资料管理中心等内设机构,有美术教育、中国画、油画、版画、视觉传达设计、环境艺术设计、公共艺术设计等多个本科专业方向,具有艺术学、美术学两个学科的硕士学位授予权,包括中国画艺术研究、油画艺术研究、美术理论研究、传统美术研究、艺术设计理论研究等五个研究方向。目前,学院拥有一支教学经验丰富、专业基础扎实、整体力量雄厚的师资队伍,在46名专业教师中,有教授9人,副教授15人,其中博士3人,硕士15人。全院现有研究生近100人,本科生500余人。
近年来,学院教师在承担繁重的教学任务之余,完成了大量的科研与创作工作,出版专著和教材十余部,发表论文百余篇,在国内外各种学术期刊发表作品和各类展览展出美术作品千余件,上百件美术作品获得省级以上奖励。
西北师范大学美术学院是教育部设立的十一所体育与艺术师资培养培训基地之一,在《人民网》公布的2002年中国大学艺术学科总排名中名列第19位,在师范院校中名列第4位。

Brief Introduction to
College of Fine Arts of Northwest Normal University
College of Fine Arts of Northwest Normal University originated from the Section of Manual Work of National Northwest Normal College established in 1939 and is at present one of the eighteen colleges of this university.
The November of 1949 saw the systematical conversion of the Department of Art from one of three-year-schooling into that of four-year-schooling so as to suit the new development of our national art education.It was then one of the earliest five normal colleges that boasted the specialty of fine arts and Mr.Lü Sibai,a celebrated educator of fine arts in China,was appointed as its first dean.Later on,the College of Fine Arts underwent several changes in its names and installments.In 1996.the Department of Fine Arts and the Department of Music were combined to form the College of Dunhuang Arts,from which the present-day College of Fine Arts was separated in January 2006.
Over sixty years,more than ten masters of art like Lü Sibai,Chang Shuhong,Hong Yiran,Liu Wengqing,Fang Yun,Wang Yueyun,Huang Zhou,Chen Xinghua,Shang Lieping and Yang Mingzhou have worked diligently here in succession.They have accumulated a profound cultural foundation and developed a fine teaching tradition.And they have made great efforts and contributions to the national art education in the northwest region,even in the whole country besides Gansu Province.
This college has now six departments with seven specialties as follows:the Department of Art Design,the Department of Basic Course Teaching,the Department of Teaching Practice,the Research Centre of Dunhuang Art,the Reference Room.Furthermore,it possesses specialized fields of study such as the Education of Fine Arts,the Traditional Chinese Painting,Oil Painting,Block Print,the Design of Visual Transmission,the Design of Environmental Art,and the Design of Public Art.It is authorized to award Master’s Degree in the study of Art and that of Fine Arts including five specialties such as the study of Traditional Chinese Painting,of Oil Painting,of Art Theory,of theories in Artistic Design.At present,this college has a faculty of 46 members well-experienced in teaching and well-trained in the scholarly fields,among whom 9 are professors,15 associate professors,3 are awarded doctor’s degree,15 master’s degree.It has an enrollment of some 100 postgraduates and more than 500 undergraduates.
In addition to their heavy teaching task,this faculty has in recent years done a great deal of scientific research and created a lot of artistic works;up to now they have published 10-odd scholarly monographs and textbooks,over 100 academic papers,and more than 100 artistic creations in exhibition at home and abroad,amongst which over 100 have been awarded prizes beyond the provincial level.
College of Fine Arts of Northwest Normal University has been pinned down by the Ministry of Education as one of the 11 bases for cultivating and training P.E.teachers and art teachers.According to the figure released by the people’s Website in 2002.it is now ranked as the 19th among the discipline of art amidst all the universities and 4th amidst all the normal colleges and universities respectively throughout the whole country.
