Course Description For Psycholinguistic Course
Field Description:Psycholinguistics is the study of people’s actions and mental processes as they use language.At its core are speaking and listening,which have been studied in domains as different as language acquisition and language disorders.Yet the primary domain of psycholinguistics is everyday language use.–
General Topics:Language performance and language use;the acquisition,production and perception of language;psychological processes involved in speech performance;the relevance of these questions to linguistic theory.
Objectives:To survey the field of psycholinguistics and its connections to linguistic theory;to appreciate the role of the experimental method to the study of language;to critically evaluate theories and research in psycholinguistics;to practice research skills used in the study of the psychology of language;to develop communication skills,through written papers,examinations,and oral presentations.
Participants: Obligatory for linguistic students;optional for students of language teaching and literature.The participants are assumed to have passed the courses of Basic Statistics and General Linguistics.

1.Final Exam:the final exam will be held during the usual exam periods.It will be a three hour exam comprising all the topics discussed during the course.However,special emphasis will be given to the second half;i.e.the topics covered after the quiz on the 7th week.
2.Presentation:you will prepare (and present to the class)a summary of some experiments or studies related to the following topics:i)first language acquisition;ii)language production;iii)language comprehension;iv)dyslexia/aphasia;v)second language acquisition;vi)language and the brain;and vii)language and ‘theory of mind’.Each group will be allowed 15 minutes for the presentation and 5-10 minutes for answering questions from the class.This is,more or less,the standard procedure in professional conferences,so you will be able to practice for those.Presentations may not be read.It is extremely boring when someone reads a paper.You may use cue cards,but they are to be used as cues only,they are not to be read from.Also,remember that you are lecturing.There are things that the class knows,but there are things that only you,as the expert,know.Therefore,you should make use of all pedagogical tools available:handouts,transparencies,etc.,to try to get your message across as smoothly as possible.
3.Assignments:All the participants are required to complete a review on all of the following 4 key topics on psycholinguistics,1)mental lexicon;2)language comprehension;3)language production;and 4)language acquisition.To include information in the review that goes beyond the scope of the required textbooks will be rewarded.
4.Participation/Attendance:Just come with the readings done and a couple of questions that could lead to some discussion.This is a very important part of a class and I will assume that every student will have something to contribute.
Required Statements
1.It is the student's responsibility to retain a copy of his or her assignments.Should the original be lost,the student will be expected to submit the copy.
2.Any quotations or paraphrases from sources must be properly acknowledged.Failure of acknowledgment constitutes plagiarism.
